'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.' - Lao Tzu
After a long journey travelling from Copenhagen to Aarhus,
Kate and I were greeted by my ‘buddy’ Jonas and he informed us he would look after
us and try his very best to answer any questions after this any apprehension and
nerves I had, immediately settled.
We arrived at Skjoldhøjkollegiet and after I finished
unpacking, I went out to the common room and was warmly greeted by one of my
flatmates, she informed me of the ways of the flat, the rules and regulations
and the different flatmates that also lived there. She also invited me to the
different Facebook chats for the flat and the halls as a whole and said the
flat have dinner together every Sunday along with parties at the weekends and occasionally
during the week. I was so pleased that my preconceptions of the quiet flat was
a thing of the past and as I grew to know more about my flatmates I very happy
with where I was situated and was excited to get to spend the next four months
here.
On Tuesday I got to meet my Nature, Health and Democracy
(NHD) class and as I got to know more about them and their different home
countries I was excited to learn more about them as individuals. We started the
day with a few ice-breaker games and as the day progressed we quickly became
really comfortable with each other and already began planned nights out and
parties together.
On Wednesday we were brought as a class by our buddies to
register with the state and obtain a CPR number. We were informed that without
this you can do very little in Denmark and it is a vital part of citizenship in
this country.
On Thursday we had a trip to the Aros Museum and Godsbanen, both very culturally rich settings. The Aros Museum had some very aesthetically pleasing features such as the Rainbow Panorama situated at the very top of the building, giving a beautiful view of the whole city of Aarhus. Godsbanen on the other hand was a very different environment, a place where the public was able to gain access to different workshops to create their own projects; it was also a popular location of many concerts and has a bar on site, more populated during the summer months.
My NHD class had earlier decided in the week we would attend a VIA fancy dress party on Friday and all agreed to follow the theme and dress up as mimes. Before I arrived at the party I was expecting a small number of people however when we walked in, the whole university was transformed! There was a DJ, a bar and altogether about 300 people, the music was blasting and the atmosphere was amazing and I can officially say it was one of the best parties I have ever been to, it tightened the relationships within my class and was overall a great experience and set a high bar for my future expectations as VIA University College, Aarhus.
